WEST VILLAGE TOWNHOUSE

Situated on a historic block in the West Village, this Federalist townhouse of 1827 was originally home to a large, working-class Italian family who arrived in New York City by ship. Over the ensuing years, it was owned by several prominent New Yorkers, including a world-renowned dance choreographer. Yet when we began working on the house, it was in need of deep care and restoration. Our work included restoring the Landmarked façade and some of the original interior details. The house was reestablished as a single-family residence with living spaces on the lower levels and bedroom spaces on the upper floors.

We built an extension off the back of the building with a glass and steel curtain wall, which allows light to penetrate deeply into the center of the house. A new subgrade room was excavated below the garden, naturally lit by walkable skylights above. We designed the house with materials specific to the Federalist era—including reclaimed wormy chestnut floors, pine and oak millwork, Italian marble, forged steel and decorative plaster—but used them in new ways, inspired by how the contemporary family lives today.
