WASHINGTON SQUARE APARTMENT

On lower Fifth Avenue in Greenwich Village, an iconic Beaux-Arts mansion was built in 1905 with Parisian features of a dry moat, large bay windows over Fifth Avenue, a marble-clad lobby, and large apartments. When our client purchased their apartment, it was subdivided into 28 rooms with rambling hallways between them. We reconceived of the apartment, opening it up to views and natural light. We created a heart — the main living space for the family — where the views expanded over Greenwich Village. From there, two main wings formed the primary suite and the children’s suite.

Throughout the apartment, we uncovered beautiful original materials including cast iron columns, plaster moldings and stained glass windows. We wove in complementary leathered marble, bleached sycamore wood, bronze details, and handmade ceramic tiles. The apartment incorporates both its historic roots and open spaces for the contemporary life of this young, busy family.
