HUDSON RIVER APARTMENT

This West Village apartment, designed for a young and growing family, is perched above the Hudson River where the sunlight is ample and the views are tremendous. To capture these vistas, we framed key moments— of the river, the cityscape, historic facades, the Empire State spire, the Statue of Liberty— as locus points of the family’s daily activities. Their love for entertaining friends, playing with their children, watching sporting events, and sharing family meals determined how to organize the internal flow of the apartment.

Situated in the corner of the apartment, the wool-and-wood clad media room is an oasis for relaxation; in the opposite corner, a light-filled and colorful playroom provides space for the children to explore and be joyful. The family’s colorful art collection provides a series of focal points that counterbalance the vivid sunlight and the natural material palette of the architecture. Throughout the space, the textures of plaster, wool, wood, metal, and stone connect with the human scale through touch, sight, and sound. These intimate experiences are laced together with expansive exterior views, connecting the apartment to the city and beyond.
